The short answer

A hybrid or EV with a failed battery is still worth real money — usually far more than the pack alone. A dead traction battery does not make the car worthless; it makes the rest of the car the asset. As a rule of thumb, if the quoted repair exceeds about 60% of what the car would sell for working, selling as-is is the better financial outcome. In Northland specifically, first-generation Nissan Leafs degrade faster than the national average because they have no liquid battery cooling and this is the warmest, most humid region in the country.

Why Northland Is Harder On Batteries Than Anywhere Else In NZ

Most battery advice online is written for Auckland, or for the northern hemisphere. Neither describes what happens to a traction battery living between Whangārei Heads and Cape Rēinga.

Three things stack against you up here.

1. Heat, with nowhere for it to go

The first-generation Nissan Leaf — the 2011 to 2017 cars that make up the overwhelming majority of used-import EVs in New Zealand — uses passive air cooling. There is no liquid thermal management system. The pack sheds heat into whatever air happens to be around it.

That design decision is why the same model year Leaf can show wildly different health depending on where it lived. Cars that spent their lives in hot climates commonly show far heavier capacity loss than identical cars from cool ones. Northland is New Zealand's warmest region, and a car parked on a north-facing Tikipunga driveway through a Whangārei February is doing its pack no favours.

The practical consequence: a Northland Leaf of a given age will often show one more bar lost than the same car from Otago. That is not a defect and it is not something you did wrong. It is physics plus geography.

2. Salt air gets into the parts that decide whether a pack is salvageable

We already cover what salt damage does to a Northland vehicle, but on an electrified car it hits somewhere new. The traction battery on most EVs sits in an underfloor tray. On hybrids it usually lives under the rear seat or in the boot floor. Either way, the case seals, the vent paths, the HV connectors and the earth points are all exposed to the same salt-laden air that eats sills and brake lines out here.

Corroded HV connectors and a compromised pack case are the difference between a battery that can be safely opened and module-harvested, and one that goes straight to recycling. That distinction changes what the pack is worth, which changes what the car is worth.

3. Northland distances kill a degraded EV earlier

This is the part almost nobody accounts for. A 24 kWh Leaf at 9 bars is still a perfectly good car in central Auckland — the trips are short and chargers are everywhere. The same car at 9 bars in Kaitaia, Dargaville or Hokianga is close to useless, because the distances between where people live and where they need to be are long, and the charging network thins out fast once you leave State Highway 1.

The economic write-off point for an EV arrives earlier in Northland than it does in a city. Owners here tend to hit the "this car no longer does the job" wall a year or two before the battery would have forced the issue elsewhere.

Northland reality check: if you are in the Far North, Hokianga or the Kaipara and your Leaf can no longer complete your regular run without a mid-trip charge, the car has effectively reached end of life for you — regardless of what the bars say.

Hybrid, PHEV Or EV — What You Actually Own

These three get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing. The chemistry, the failure mode and the resale logic all differ.

Nationally, this matters because the New Zealand EV fleet is not built from new cars. It is built from Japanese used imports, and the Nissan Leaf alone accounts for roughly 80% of used-import EV volume. That single model is the reason this article exists — there are tens of thousands of them on New Zealand roads, and the earliest ones are now fifteen years old.

Across the whole country there are now roughly 98,900 fully electric light vehicles and about 49,600 plug-in hybrids on the road, according to EVDB's analysis of Ministry of Transport fleet data. The Ministry for the Environment has projected that around 84,000 EV batteries in New Zealand will reach end of life by 2030 — a figure reported by RNZ. A meaningful share of those are in Northland driveways right now.

How To Check Your Battery Health In Ten Minutes

Do this before you ring anyone for a quote. Walking into a conversation knowing your actual State of Health puts you in a completely different negotiating position, and it takes less time than a trip to the dairy.

If you have a Nissan Leaf

  1. Look at the capacity bars. On the right of the dash you will see up to twelve small bars. These are not the charge gauge — they are the long-term health gauge. Count them.
  2. Get the real number with LeafSpy. A cheap OBD2 Bluetooth dongle plus the LeafSpy app gives you actual State of Health as a percentage, plus Hx (a measure of internal resistance) and individual cell voltages. Total outlay is usually under $60 and it takes about ten minutes.
  3. Note the cell voltage spread. A wide spread between the strongest and weakest cells means one weak module is dragging the pack — which sometimes means a targeted repair is viable instead of a full replacement.

If you have a Toyota or Honda hybrid

  1. Run Dr Prius or Hybrid Assistant. Same OBD2 dongle, different app. It will grade each module and flag the weak ones.
  2. Watch for the symptom pattern. Fuel economy falling off a cliff, the state-of-charge bar swinging wildly between full and empty, the engine running when it should not, and finally the red triangle with "Check Hybrid System".
  3. Check for a cooling fan blockage first. On Aquas and Priuses the HV battery fan intake is usually under or beside the rear seat, and it clogs with dust, hair and — genuinely — sand. Northland cars carry a lot of beach in them. A blocked fan cooks the pack. Clearing it is a twenty-dollar job that sometimes buys years.
Do this first, always: before you accept that a hybrid pack is dead, check the cooling fan and its filter. It does not always save the battery, but it costs almost nothing to rule out.

The bar display is the most misunderstood gauge in the New Zealand used car market. Here is what it actually means.

The insight most sellers miss: the bars are a lagging indicator. Capacity steps down in chunks, so a car can lose several percent of health without a bar disappearing — and then drop one apparently overnight. Two Leafs both showing 10 bars can be five percentage points of SOH apart. Repair, Replace Or Sell: The Decision Maths

This is a arithmetic problem, not an emotional one. Three numbers decide it.

Number one: what the repair actually costs

Notice the gap. Reconditioning a small NiMH hybrid pack is genuinely affordable. Re-batterying a Leaf is not, and no upgrade priced at fifteen to twenty-three thousand dollars will ever make sense on a car worth a fraction of that.

Number two: what the car is worth working

Use sold prices, not asking prices. Trade Me asking prices on old hybrids and Leafs are aspirational. Filter to completed listings, same model year, similar kilometres, and — for a Leaf — similar bars, because bars move the price more than odometer does.

Number three: the 60% line

The rule

If the repair quote is more than 60% of the car's working market value, selling as-is almost always produces the better net outcome — because you are spending real money to restore value you will never fully recover on resale, on a car that has other age-related costs queued up behind the battery.

Below 60%, and the rest of the car is sound — good WOF prospects, no rust perforation, no upcoming cambelt or CVT worry — repair usually wins. Above it, sell.

There is a fourth number people forget: what the car costs you while you decide. Registration, insurance and depreciation keep running on a car sitting in the driveway not being driven. Six months of dithering on a $2,000 car is a meaningful fraction of its value.

Three Worked Northland Examples

Example A — 2013 Toyota Aqua, Kamo, 148,000 km

Fuel economy has halved, the SOC bar swings from full to empty, and Dr Prius flags two poor modules. A reconditioned pack is quoted at $1,400 fitted. The car sells working for around $6,000.

Maths: $1,400 ÷ $6,000 = 23%. Well under the line. Body is straight, no rust issues. Verdict: repair. This is a car with years left in it and the fix is cheap relative to value.

Example B — 2012 Nissan Leaf, Dargaville, 9 bars

Real-world range is down to roughly 70 km. The owner's regular run is Dargaville to Whangārei and back — comfortably beyond what the car can now do without stopping. A used pack swap is quoted at just over $5,000. The car sells working, at 9 bars, for a low four-figure sum.

Maths: the repair costs more than the car is worth. It is not close. Verdict: sell as-is. No amount of optimism fixes a repair that exceeds 100% of value.

Example C — 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Kerikeri, 190,000 km

The EV range has collapsed to a handful of kilometres but the car still drives fine on petrol, so the owner has quietly ignored it for three years. Now the ABS pump and the rear suspension both need work, and there is coastal corrosion starting on the subframe.

Maths: the battery is the smallest of three problems. Once you stack the non-battery repairs against the value, the car is past the line even before you price the pack. Verdict: sell as-is. The PHEV trap is that petrol-mode drivability lets a car keep going long past the point where it made sense to keep spending on it.

What Actually Drives The Offer On A Hybrid Or EV

Here is the thing most owners have backwards: we are usually not buying the battery. We are buying everything else.

A traction pack with a hard fault is worth relatively little on its own — the value is in module harvesting and materials recovery, and that is a modest number. The car around it is where the money is:

  • Drivetrain and inverter. Electric motors and inverters are expensive, they rarely fail, and there is steady demand for good used units.
  • Body panels and lights. A straight, unrusted panel from a Leaf or a Prius is worth real money to somebody repairing one.
  • Interior and electronics. Screens, BMS units, charge ports, seats.
  • Wheels, brakes, suspension. Hybrids and EVs are gentle on brakes because of regenerative braking, so the discs and pads are often barely worn even at high kilometres.
  • Catalytic converter on hybrids — hybrids run rich-lean cycles that tend to preserve them.
  • The metal itself, which is the floor under every offer regardless of condition.

What lifts an offer:

  • Body free of rust perforation — genuinely rare on a coastal Northland car, and it is worth a premium when we find it
  • Complete, undamaged pack case, even if the cells are shot, because it can be safely opened
  • All keys, charge cables and the original charge lead present
  • Straight panels and unbroken glass
  • Documented service history, especially any prior battery work

What lowers it:

  • Flood or salt water intrusion into the pack — this is a safety issue, covered below
  • Physical damage to the battery case or underfloor tray
  • Missing keys, which complicates safely de-energising the vehicle (we still buy these)
  • Stripped or missing components

Where Your Battery Goes After Collection

This is worth understanding, partly because it is the question people ask most, and partly because how a buyer answers it tells you whether they are legitimate.

New Zealand does not yet have a fully implemented regulated stewardship scheme for large batteries, though one has been in development for years. The Battery Industry Group — a cross-sector body whose members span energy, waste, transport and research organisations — has been designing a circular product stewardship scheme covering non-lead-acid batteries over 5 kg, with governance now sitting with Auto Stewardship New Zealand. Members of the Motor Industry Association have separately committed to a code of practice intended to keep EV and hybrid batteries out of landfill, as Drive Electric documents.

The practical constraint is that onshore lithium processing capacity in New Zealand is limited, and the AA has reported recycling costs in the range of $3,000 to $8,000 per tonne. That cost is real and it sits somewhere in the chain.

In practice a pack coming off a Northland vehicle follows one of three paths:

  1. Module harvesting. Good modules from a partially failed pack are tested and go into reconditioned packs for cars still worth fixing. This is the highest-value outcome and it is why an intact, openable pack case matters.
  2. Second-life storage. Packs below automotive standard can still hold useful charge for stationary storage — off-grid setups, solar buffering. There is genuine demand for this in rural Northland.
  3. Materials recycling. Where nothing else is viable, the pack goes into the recycling stream for recovery of the metals.

A question worth asking any buyer: "what happens to the traction battery?" A legitimate operator will give you a specific answer. Damaged, Swollen And Flood-Affected Packs

This section matters more in Northland than almost anywhere else in New Zealand, because we get the weather. After Cyclone Gabrielle and successive flood events, a meaningful number of Northland vehicles took water — and an electrified vehicle that has been submerged is a different proposition from a petrol one.

If your hybrid or EV has been in floodwater, especially salt or brackish water, treat it as live and dangerous.

Do not, under any circumstances

  • Attempt to start, charge or jump-start it
  • Open, probe or disconnect anything with orange cabling — orange means high voltage
  • Store it inside a garage, carport, or within a few metres of a building or another vehicle
  • Assume it is fine because it looks fine. Salt water intrusion causes damage that develops over days, not seconds.

A lithium pack that has been submerged can go into thermal runaway with no warning and hours or days after the event. If you can safely do so, move the vehicle to open ground away from structures and leave it there. Then call us and tell us it is a flood vehicle — we need to know before we arrive so the right equipment comes.

Warning signs on any traction battery: a swollen or distorted pack case, hissing, a sweet chemical or solvent smell, unexplained warmth around the battery area, or smoke of any colour. Any of those means clear the area and call Fire and Emergency on 111.

The Paperwork

Selling an electrified vehicle uses exactly the same process as any other vehicle in New Zealand. There is no special EV paperwork, and anyone telling you otherwise is confused or worse.

  • Photo ID matching the registered person
  • Proof of ownership — the registration papers, or we can work with you if they are lost

Two extras specific to electrified cars:

  • Include the charge cables. The portable EVSE and any Type 1 or Type 2 lead should go with the car. They are worth money and their absence gets noticed.

If there is money still owing on the car, or you are dealing with a vehicle from an estate, both are workable — they just need sorting before collection rather than after.

Nine Mistakes We See Every Week

  1. Pricing the pack instead of the car. The single most expensive error. A dead pack is worth little; the car around it is worth several times that. Never accept an offer framed as "your battery is dead so the car is worthless".
  2. Assuming a warning light means the pack is finished. On hybrids especially, one weak module, a blocked cooling fan or a failed sensor produces the same dashboard theatre as a genuinely dead battery.
  3. Not checking the cooling fan first. Twenty-dollar fix, thousands of dollars of consequence. Northland cars are full of sand and pet hair.
  4. Trusting the bars instead of getting a LeafSpy reading. Bars lag actual SOH. Ten bars covers a wide range and you may be selling yourself short — or holding out on a car that is worse than you think.
  5. Waiting for the market to improve. It does not. A degrading pack degrades further while it sits, and calendar ageing continues even when the car is not driven. Every month of waiting costs you.
  6. Leaving a lithium EV sitting at 100% or at zero for months. If a car is off the road awaiting sale, roughly 50% charge is kindest to the pack — and a healthier pack is worth more when you do sell.
  7. Paying for a full pack replacement on a car worth less than the pack. Run the 60% rule before, not after.
  8. Selling privately without disclosing battery health. Beyond the ethics, misrepresenting a vehicle's condition creates a real liability under New Zealand consumer law. Disclose the bars and the SOH.
  9. Handing the car over without an MR13A notice of disposal. Until that is filed, the vehicle is legally still yours — including any infringements it collects.

Do you buy hybrids and EVs with completely dead batteries?

Yes. A failed traction battery does not stop us buying the car, and it does not make the car worthless. The drivetrain, inverter, panels, wheels, interior and metal all carry value independently of the pack. How much is a dead hybrid battery worth on its own?

This is exactly why you should never price the pack in isolation — the car as a whole is worth substantially more, and any buyer who frames the conversation around the battery alone is framing it in their favour, not yours.

Is my Nissan Leaf worth anything at 8 bars?

Yes. At 8 bars — roughly 66–72% State of Health — the car has limited usefulness for Northland distances, but it retains real value in its motor, inverter, body panels, wheels and remaining battery modules. Should I replace the battery before selling to get more money?

Almost never. You will not recover the cost of a pack replacement in the sale price — you would be spending, for example, five thousand dollars to add considerably less than five thousand dollars of resale value. The exception is a cheap module-level repair on a late-model hybrid that is otherwise in very good condition, where a $1,300 recondition on a car worth $8,000 can genuinely pay for itself.

Why does my Leaf lose bars faster than my cousin's in Christchurch?

Temperature. The first-generation Leaf has no liquid battery cooling — it relies on passive air cooling, so ambient heat drives degradation directly. Northland is the warmest and one of the most humid regions in New Zealand, so the same car ages faster here than it would further south. It is geography, not neglect.

Can you collect an EV that will not move at all?

Yes, and at no charge. We send a tow-equipped truck anywhere in Northland — Whangārei, Kerikeri, Kaitaia, Dargaville, the Hokianga, Mangawhai. Electrified vehicles need to be moved with a bit more care than a petrol car, particularly if the pack is suspect, so tell us the make, model and whether it has been in water when you call.

My hybrid or EV was in the floods. Is it safe to keep at home?

Treat it as a hazard until it is assessed. Do not attempt to start or charge it, do not touch anything with orange cabling, and do not store it in or beside a garage or another vehicle. A submerged lithium pack can enter thermal runaway with no warning and days after the event. Move it to open ground if you safely can, and tell us it is a flood vehicle when you call so we bring the right gear.

Do I need to include the charging cables?

Yes, include them. The portable charging unit and any Type 1 or Type 2 leads are genuinely valuable and their absence reduces the offer. Same goes for both key fobs, the boot floor and the parcel shelf.

What happens to my battery after you take the car?

One of three routes: good modules are tested and harvested for reconditioned packs, packs below automotive standard go to second-life stationary storage, and anything beyond either goes into the materials recycling stream. New Zealand's regulated stewardship scheme for large batteries is still in development, but batteries do not go to landfill.

Is the paperwork different for an EV?

No. Photo ID, proof of ownership and an NZTA MR13A notice of disposal — the same as any vehicle. The only EV-specific things to check are Road User Charges and making sure the charging equipment goes with the car.

Can I sell a hybrid that still has finance owing on it?
